A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends..... after I got to feeling better I picked up my stitching where I left off and....

... so I finished up the rest of border and then thought about how I was going to go about stitching the rest of the sampler.  Since this is such a large piece and I do not like griding or stitching within grid threads I needed to have some sort of structure to stitch from.  The banner that runs across the upper middle seemed like a good place to stitch a jumping off point.  As I stitched through the words I modified some of the letters with extra stitches - I like it better.  Next up I think I'll stitch in the Tree of Knowledge in the lower half that will section off the bottom.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, I've been working on HEIOTS until I figure out the next sampler I want to start and have finally had the border ends meet...

.... I was really happy when the "vine" met up.  Since this is such a large piece measuring about 23"x 20" on this piece of 36ct linen I was just the tiniest bit uneasy that I had missed a stitch or had doubled up on a thread which would have thrown the border off - and then I would have had to my way work back to find the mistake... but since that didn't happen I'm really happy and can now rest easy as I finish up the flowers... then get to work in the middle.

A Little Thrifting

Gentle Friends,  I've still been going about to the thrift and consignment shops and a few Estate Sales, but there's been next to nothing to buy and bring home.  Lots of things I liked, but for one or more reasons I just passed on ..... however, things turned around on Saturday when I ran up against a super piece of stoneware...

... here is when I got it home... a little on the grubby side, but after a good scrub and some silver polish.....

.... this great jug/ewer cleaned up like I knew it would.  I found it at a Goodwill, in the 1/2 off section.  The sterling collar and lid both have full sets of English hallmarks which after I did a little research can be dated to 1870 and London made.  I think this was made by Doulton in Lambeth, but there are no marks on the stoneware, and I'm going on the shape and quality and finish of the piece.  This Victorian piece is, I think, a reinterpretation of a Germanic Bartmann Jug.

A Little Night Out

Gentle Friends, this weekend Rico headed south to visit his family and I stayed home with the Who hounds.... it was quiet and uneventful.  Saturday evening some friends and I went out to dinner..... we headed for a new place on Upper Market Street in the Castro called.....

... Botellon.... which means "big bottle" in Spanish...

... the space this restaurant now occupies has been at least three other restaurants in recent years... they were all versions of Mexican eateries, none very good and all came and went with little fanfare.... however with this restaurant's soft opening and really good reviews I think it may just make it - it is very good!!!!

... they have a really extensive bar and...

... some really fun and tasty drinks...

... we started off with some crunchy calamari and I had a "Sherry, Cherry and Green Fairy" which consists of St. George absinthe, Pedro Ximenez sherry, black cherry juice, lemon.... and they had "Havey's Punches" which is made of Denizen rum, Smith and Cross rum, Banane du bresil, pineapple, orange, lime, and mint... the "Fairy" was really and I mean really good!!...almost like a strong sangria and it is served as a slushie which only makes it better!!... the punch was good but the Fairy was better!!

... the menu leans towards smaller plates and sharing which is fine and makes for a fun dinner...
 after the calamari we ordered...

... some chorizo oil cornbread.... and...

... some lamb pops...  by this time I needed another libation so I ordered a...

... "Word Play"... made up of Hanson's cucumber vodka, green chartreuse, Dolin dry vermouth, Averna Amaro, lime, basil... it was good but the "Fairy" was better!!

...and then we ordered a Potato Bomba....  the cornbreads are bite size and packed with flavor, spicy and delicious....  the lamb pops  - I had read about online -  were superbly cooked with a great char, sitting on tzatziki sauce, mint gastrique and feta, they were delicious a real nod to Greece... then we ordered a couple of their stone hearth cooked pizzas...

... the first to arrive was the "Con Carne" - tomato sauce, basil, fresh mozzarella, house Italian sausage, pepperoni, olives, parmesan... and then arrived...

.... the Margherita" - tomato sauce, fresh basil, fresh mozzarella, parmesan, olive oil...  both were piping hot and very good!!!  We sat around for a while feeling good and full, then decided to walk down to Sweet Inspirations......

We thought about sitting down and having some cake but decided against that and instead took slices home...

________________

... I chose a slice of Princess Cake - which is a cream cake lightly soaked in Triple Sec, and layered with custard, raspberry compote, whipped cream, and dressed housemade marzipan.  After I got home I made a pot of tea and enjoyed my slice of sweetness.  It was a lovely way to wind up and uneventful day!!

I would highly recommend both Botellon and Sweet Inspirations.

A Little Stitchin' Finish

Gentle Friends, it was a quiet weekend here by the Bay and a lovely Epiphany Sunday.....and for my "Little Christmas" present to myself, I finished up ......

... BBD "Christmas Garden" - Stitched on 36ct Navy Bean
_______________

It was a great piece to work on over the Christmas Holidays.... and as you can see I recharted the bottom.  I've seen this sampler finished up as charted with the words "Christmas Garden" in the bottom, and with the bottom filled in with a super alphabet. I waffled back and forth with the idea of stitching the alphabet because I knew from the get-go I didn't want to stitch it as charted.  Then I thought why not just cut it off and rework the border... et voila my solution.  I also have not stitched in a bunch of initials, at this point I am leaning towards not, but you never know.....

I also reworked the colors from what was called for and here are the specific changes I made...

Charted - CC Calico Kitty - Changed to WDW Indian Summer ( a red I really love!!)
Charted - CC Fools Gold - Changed to WDW Schneckley
Charted GA Endive - Changed to GA Dried Thyme
Charted GA Heirloom Gold - Changed to WDW Havanna

A Little more Christmas 2017 - Part III........ We Have a Fun Lunch

Gentle Freinds,  as I said before it seems that I slept late, napped a bunch and even squeezed in a little stitching.... towards the end of the Christmas Holiday Rico and I headed downtown to meet up with some friends for lunch... we went to a new place to us... Samovar

... Samovar is located in a lovely setting the Yerba Buena Gardens a green oasis with a super waterfall that you can walk under...

and the gardens from the east are overlooked by the Museum of Modern Art....
after walking around we headed up to the restaurant...

... there is a wall of tea tins and samovars just in case you didn't realize they served tea and eats here......

... I ordered the Rusian Pairing.... the tea is served in a small French press...  this is a not very efficient wat to serve tea, as it cools off way too fast, but it looked nice... and was very good...

.... with the Russian Pairing the borscht was very good the chicken salad in the sandwich was very good, the bread was far too big and the side salad was all right, a little bitter..... but again it all looked great...

.... Rico chose the English pairing and here's what he got, the quiche he said was excellent, again with the salad a little on the bitter side and a nice scone, which was on the crumbly and dry side, but still tasty...  overall it was a fun lunch ... I would say my overall impression with Samovar is that the location and views are top notch, the food and service were just alright and a bit on the expensive side, I think for tea-time I will go back to Lovejoy's.  But, the company was excellent and it was a fun time sitting and chatting away with everyone!!!

A Little More Christmas of 2017.... Part II

Gentle Friends, Sunday, Christmas Eve  I finished up the Lane Cake... HERE's the recipe I used... and here's a snap of the finished cake...

... I had never made one before, and I was leary of the minimal amount of frosting that it called for so I made a full batch....and I ended up with lots and lots of extra fluffy white and what does on do .... you try to use it up....so I made some silly decorations with a jury-rigged pastry bag..... I couldn't find my real one.... and here's...

... the remnants in the kitchen sink.  Making this frosting brought back some really great memories as it was my mom's go-to recipe.... 7-Minute Frosting.  I had never tried to make it before but she made it all the time and always at Christmas for the Birthday cake.
_______________

I also made the mushroom filling...

... for the main event for dinner the next day....  here's the menu...

A Look Back at the Christmas of 2017..... Pt 1

Gentle Friends, the next couple of posts are of our Christmas Holidays....
with quite a few snaperoos..... so here goes..........
____________

The Friday before Christmas found us at....

... our wonderful SF Flower Market.  We were having a few friends over for Christmas Lunch and so we had to get the house ready and what better way than with a load of flowers....

.... as usual, there was quite lot to choose from...

.... and lots of Christmas stuff was still available...
these bay and pine garland were really lovely and smelled great!!

... there was even lots of early tulips...

... these berry branches are super and I love them, but with the dogs, we never get any since they drop all over the place and I don't want to take the chance on a poisoning.... but I still really like them!!

... we had decided on red and white roses and this bunch was a nice starting off point for ideas....

.... there are lots of variations of color and tons of roses...

.... and all sorts of mixed bunches of flowers.... some worked... and some really didn't...
we usually buy just bunches of flowers and Rico creates the arrangements ....
it's easier and we get what we really want !!

This year I wanted to take Rico out to a Christmas Tea at Lovejoy's.... so I made a reservation and Saturday we headed over and it was very relaxing...

.. the tea room was decorated for Christmas...

... one of the fun things about Lovejoys is the fun use of mix-matched china for all the tables...

... there are lots of choices for eats with tea, we got two"Queens Tea's"...

... with each "Tea", you get a pot of tea... I got a lovely Citrus based tea that was full of spice and peel, it tasted like Christmas in a cup, delicious!!  Rico got the lavender and vanilla, another delicious black flavored tea...

.. with our Queens Teas we got a couple of little sausage rolls...

... the food is served on tiered trays...

... with each Queen's tea you get a choice of two tea sandwiches, I chose pear/stilton and smoked salmon/cream cheese, Rico chose the special salad sandwich and chicken walnut salad... you also get warm crumpets, scones, green salad and caraway cole slaw....  after a long leisurely tea we headed home and I got started on the preliminary cooking  I needed to get done for Christmas .....
________________________

With friends coming around and with two cakes to bake I got started....
one of the snacks I wanted to make was some sugared peanuts.... easy and tasty

...  it's a two-part process, stir raw peanuts, water, and sugar then....

when all the water is evaporated you roasted them stirring occasionally until dry and crunchy.
__________

There were two cakes I needed to make, one for the coffee hour after Midnight Mass and the second one a Birthday cake for Baby Jesus.  I've talked about the Birthday cake before in other Christmas posts there has been a birthday cake every year since I can remember at my family's Christmas table.....I've made all kinds of cakes and this year the Birthday cake I chose to make was a Lane Cake.

...so, I wanted to get started and make the fruit/nut filling for the cake.
The cake I made for after Chrismas mass...

...was a glazed Rum cake...

....  along with the Sugared peanuts, I made up some Spicy Nuts and Bolts (Chex Mix).
___________

I think that will wrap up today's post.  Thanks for stopping by do stop again!!

Take care,
