Campagne - Auberge, l'Eglise et la Chateau, Grotte de Grand Roc - Laugerie Basse and l'Eglise du St. Martin du Tayac

Gentle Friends, lots to see today.... so let gets going.......

... after leaving la Roquette we headed down the road and stopped at the Auberge (Hotel) across from a Chateau.  The Chateau is owned by the France Government and is under restoration as are the grounds.  You can't go in the building but you can walk in the extensive garden......  but for lunch I had.....

... Foie Gras de Canard mi-cuit au Naturel....  and a beer.....

.... and my Nos Formules (different menus to choose from), of  entree (foie gras) and dessert et boisson (beer) - the dessert I chose was Tiramissu Framboise....  it was a great lunch!!!!  Our view from the out door seating was this lovely little church...  the gates to the Chateau are to the left .....

...  this is the view from inside the garden of the Chateau...

.... the nave of the church..

..... the plaque for the dead from the Great War (WWI)...

 ... the main alter....

....  a nice little 19th century quatrefoil window....

... with my back to the gate you cross the bridge and see the Chateau...

... walking around the gardens and this was a great view of the Chateau...

After the lunch break we drove over to ......

The Grotte du grand Roc is a wonderful natural cave found half way up the cliff face above the Vezere river.  It is right next to the pre-historic shelter of Laugerie-Basse.  Both of these sites are classified UNESCO World Heritage Sites and so worth a visit!!

 .... the cliff face.....

... the view of the valley from the entrance...

....  the pictures do not let you see how really beautiful this place is....

... another shot of the cliff face from the other direction......
___________

From the Grand Rock, we headed to Tayac...

... and the fortified church.....  here is some info from the sign outside of the church..

....  the Great War plaque of the dead from Tayac...

 ... the main alter...

... the statue of the Blessed Virgin was just lovely and the homey flowers and small candles just added to the charm.....

.....  you can just see this place being a refuge in times of war, thick walls and so massive!!

... the town of Tayac was all walking up and down and so we stopped for a drink.....

... I had to have some water, and look - in the glass are three, count them 3 ice cubes!!!!  I never got ice unless I begged..... I guess the waiter just knew I was from the US and took pity on me!!

More tomorrow, thanks for stopping in today!!

take care,
edgar

  1. Another great day. I couldn't do the caves...what I couldn't see standing at the entrance would go unseen by me! I did notice on the plaques for the dead from WWI that there were six or seven men who had the same last name. Makes you wonder if they were brothers. Ice water is not common in France? The things we learn from you! Have a great weekend Edgar. See you Monday.

  2. Wow Edgar, with the amount of foie you ate, I'm surprised you didn't come home limping with gout! ;)

Thanks for sharing your stunning photos!
